Shareholders 1, Take-Two 0

By Jason McMaster |

After their meeting this afternoon, the Take-Two shareholders who were threatening to oust CEO Paul Eibeler did just that and they’ve appointed a new Chief Executive. According to Reuters, Strauss Zelnick, former chief executive of BMG, has taken the spot as the chairman of the board and Benjamin Feder was named CEO. Zelnick has noted that there will be changes to the company but there will be no immediate downsizing. What can we expect to see from the company going forward?

“In three to six months we’re going to outline a plan,” said Zelnick. “We need to create more hits. I sense a lot of the creative talent is in place.” If Take-Two can avoid any more mishaps or shenanigans, maybe some of those other properties can break out. Of course, the only thing people are thinking about today is the release of the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV, the companies cash cow. Several executives were replaced today, which, along with the other changes, led to some serious after hours trading that left the stock up more than 6%.

Earlier today, Electronic Arts announced that they’ve renewed their license to release games based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels. EA, having reached an agreement with New Line Cinema and Tolkien Enterprises, plans on continuing to develop and release new games based in Middle Earth through 2008. So what’s coming up for EA other than the release of the new MMO? Oh wait, that’s not EA. What the heck is going on with all these hobbits? More

By Jason McMaster |

Gameloft, mobile game developer, has told the NY Times that they’re now working on products for the BlackBerry. The BlackBerry, a mobile email and web browsing device, was developed by Research In Motion, a Canadian firm, and introduced into the market in 1999. So far, the BlackBerry hasn’t really been the focus of gaming due to lack of sophisticated graphic capabilities, but that’s about to change. Is the BlackBerry user base ready for games? More

Massive Poised to Make Large Portion of “$700 Million Market”

By Jason McMaster |

In the technical world, if it’s out there, then odds are that Microsoft has tried it, and not always successfully. For instance, I don’t think anyone is really sold on the Zune. However, there is one interesting new area that Microsoft seems to be doing a pretty good job with: in-game advertising. Ever since Microsoft purchased Massive a while back, they’ve been quietly soldiering along, working on new ways to sell those virtual billboards and soda machines. Priya Ganapati, staff reporter with The Street, recently sat down and talked with Cory Van Arsdale, CEO of Massive, about what they’re up to and what they think of Google entering into the in-game ad market.
